Week 8 Initial Reaction

This week has not been quite as challenging besides trying to make it through all the presentations that I have enjoyed thus far. But in regards to wireless technology it is amazing to see how one can be on the road driving, in an airplane, or just being mobile and yet have the ability to communicate. My favorite technology is the cell phone because it has internet access, ability to communicate with those in the store to pick up more groceries, the kids, or whatever. It can also assist one with time management and scheduling. The cell phone is a powerful tool along with the other emerging technologies in our society. The other capabilities outside of higher education or corporate America is wireless capabilities to facilitate learning for students in K-12 environments if educators are not resistant. Just as in higher education, instructors hold classes outside, K-12 could take field trips outdoors to study the environment and other things as discussed in our readings this week. But if educators are intimidated and withdrawn from the emerging technology then they lose out on invaluable learning and teaching opportunities for themselves and students as well.

Week 7 Initial Reaction

My initial reaction to this lesson was quite satisfying yet overwhelming. My presentation and assignment just happened to coincide due to the topic I selected, so that made it a little easier. But what was overwhelming was all the work that is involved in blogging, messenging, discussion boards, and finally the multimedia presentation. Even though I started a few weeks earlier with gathering my research doing each slide, and trying to pull things together, whew...I was glad when I finally turned in a somewhat completed project. All projects can always be improved. I am always finding things after I complete something that can be changed, but that goes back to the foundational courses that I took at Walden University. No project, kam, or assignment ever feels completed but when is enough research enough research, at some point you have to say enough and let it be. Thus, I always try to keep this in mind since I am a perfectionist at times. But as I grow older, I learn to overlook things and enjoy the imperfections and flaws involved in the artwork, assignments, myself, my family members, or whatever.

Yet what I enjoyed most about this assignment is not the flaws that I see after I submit the assignments but I enjoyed the discussion on one of my favorite topics. I really enjoy synchronous and online learning. I have enjoyed my academic studies at American Intercontinental University and Walden University. Online learning has become my preferred style of learning and preference.

Week 6 Initial Reaction

My initial reaction to this week's lesson and exercise was quite overwhelming. It seems that there is so much to do but not enough time to do it. I really would like to provide a link to a podcast on my blogger but as the text has suggested it takes time and effort to learn new skills. There are only so many hours in a day. Thus, I am overjoyed to know that we can always keep our text and go back to them as reference manuals long after the course is over. Our goal at this time is to provide an introduction or overview to the literature that is out there. This is what is most important for any instructor or facilitator to realize; our goal is as the instructor is not to impart knowledge per say but to orchestrate learning opportunities for our students by providing thought provoking topics, discussions, and materials that will make them thirsty to want to learn more.

Week 5 Initial Reaction

My initial reaction to this lesson was quite abrupt. I received an email from a fellow student and I had not yet researched the topic to thoroughly answer the question. Of course, this made me all the more eager to find an answer for her and I about the usage of open learning environments. My initial consultation was the textbook which was very thorough in providing an overview and explanation which tends to generally be the purpose of compiled text. Each author tends to give an overview, generic information, and then provides examples. However, the tool that I find most useful in open and online environments is the web, internet, databases, encyclopedias, and online learning community that help clarify the information. This is one of the purposes of open and online learning environments.

For example, in my researching the answer for the other student and myself, I went to the Walden University database and typed in the following search words, "open and online learning environment". I placed the open on one line and online on the second line and learning environment on the third line. Through this search in the database, I was able to obtain the literature that I have posted on the discussion board. I also downloaded the open source material that my classmate gave but I have not been able to use it as of yet. This is one of the things the Richardson text mentions in the Read/Write web is that learners must know how to scan and read literature if there will be feeders on your blog. Through my doctoral studies I am greatly improving this skills, although I do tend to thoroughly read if the scanning does not provoke my understanding.

Reflections - Blogs and Wikis

Nia:

The information you shared about blogs and wikis was very insightful, especially about Moodle. I plan to explore this technology in more detail. Do you use Open Office?
