Response to Week 12 Reflection

I too have learned a lot from blogging and instant messaging. I have used Yahoo messenger before and have spoken to my nephew who lives in Guyana several times. I was a bit hesitant at first but I have enjoyed blogging and no doubt will use it more in the future.

Good luck to you and see you in future classes in the winter or spring quarters.

Week 12 Final Thoughts and Initial Reaction

I have learned a great deal over the last twelve weeks. I had not ever heard of a wiki before this class and I had not ever used a wiki, blog, podcast, or many of the other emerging technologies. I also did not know what Open Source tools were or repositories. So I am certainly on information overload right now. I even learned how to use my web/video cam which was quite exciting along with learning that Microsoft had software entitled MS Producer. I certainly have grown a lot intellectually through the readings and technically through my discussion boards, chatting through MSN messenger where my peers taught me a lot, and I used the Walden University chat which was rather boring.

I also had the opportunity to use the MSN Messenger phone service which is similar to Yahoo Messenger’s Phone service that I use all the time to make international phone calls. Then I had the opportunity to learn about sharing files or document sharing to send files that were too large to send via email or to upload to the web. Thus, this has been a growing experience that challenged me mentally, physically, and my time management skills.

Week 11

This week's lesson on simulation, simulation-game, and game really threw me for a loop. I misread the question and had to resubmit several post to get things clarified, but I managed to get things corrected so that they were scholarly presentations. But I really believe that this emerging technology would benefit all academic disciplines, especially those in the helping profession. I believe that giving learners the opportunity to be placed in scenarios of what would you do or simulating real-life situations is helpful in addressing how they would actually handle the real event.

The next challenge that I had this week was posting, uploading, and producing my video/webcam to the doc sharing. Thanks to Dr. Roger Powley I learned about MS Producer and was able to get my MS preventing to play successfully with this software. Thus, I will be sending each of you a copy through the blogging shared documents and I will also upload it to the docsharing section, if it is not too large. This is a class that I have been teaching through our Christian university about how to teach Christian Education classes through traditional and online settings.

Week 10 Initial Reaction

My initial reaction this week was quite challenging. I did not know a lot about this emerging technology and the only thing that kept coming to mind was a digital library. My employer markets a digital library at Phelps County Regional Medical Center for physicians that desire to have immediate access to medical information in between patients. But as I kept reading the journal articles, I quickly learned that there was more to a digital repository than just a library. It can be used in a variety of contexts to facilitate learning in conjunction with learning management and learning content management software and a whole slew of things. But again I did not grasp these conecpts until I kept reading more scholarly literature. I also looked up literature on learning object metadata because I kept seeing this pop up in the database searches along with my yahoo searches. This type of learning uses an XML file which I believe is what blogger works off of. So there is a lot to learn with this resource and it can be applied to various situations.

Week 9 Initial Reaction

When I initially read the title of the posting, I had to review the course syllabus. Panic almost set in my heart because I thought that I was going to have to review some learning management systems or upload a lesson to one or something. I have dealt with the universal class learning content management system and I have briefly looked at module's. I know that the universal class one is pretty easy because it allows you to copy and paste your Microsoft Word documents into their windows or templates without knowing html. But it is difficult to get published according their standards if you want o publicize it to the general public. Unlike Moodle or other LCMS's they probably do not provide oversight into those using the software to see if the courses are developed appropriately.

Thus, with the threat of actually engaging a LMS or LCMS, I am little more relaxed about what was presented this week. It was more of an introduction to LMS and LCMS capabilities. I am assuming that our 12 week class is too short to actually engage in an online implementation. I wonder if Walden University would ever offer that or permit that as a dissertation where someone actually used to ADDIE model to design a course. This could be one KAM hmm...?

Week 8 Initial Reaction

This week has not been quite as challenging besides trying to make it through all the presentations that I have enjoyed thus far. But in regards to wireless technology it is amazing to see how one can be on the road driving, in an airplane, or just being mobile and yet have the ability to communicate. My favorite technology is the cell phone because it has internet access, ability to communicate with those in the store to pick up more groceries, the kids, or whatever. It can also assist one with time management and scheduling. The cell phone is a powerful tool along with the other emerging technologies in our society. The other capabilities outside of higher education or corporate America is wireless capabilities to facilitate learning for students in K-12 environments if educators are not resistant. Just as in higher education, instructors hold classes outside, K-12 could take field trips outdoors to study the environment and other things as discussed in our readings this week. But if educators are intimidated and withdrawn from the emerging technology then they lose out on invaluable learning and teaching opportunities for themselves and students as well.
